My Honest Review of Xcaret Mexico: A Dream Family Trip with Some Pros & Cons

Writer: tashawalltashawall

I recently took a trip to Xcaret Mexico, a luxury resort that I had been obsessed with ever since I saw it on Instagram. The second I laid eyes on it, I knew I had to go. Even though it’s one of the most expensive resorts in Mexico, I knew that if I went anywhere else, I’d be filled with major FOMO and regret. So, I booked it. And while the trip itself was incredible in many ways, there were definitely some unexpected moments—both good and bad.

The Travel Nightmare: Getting There Was a Struggle

Before I even made it to paradise, I had to deal with the absolute disaster that is Canadian airlines. I knew going in that delays and cancellations were basically inevitable, so I tried to be smart and use my intuition when booking my flights.

• WestJet delayed our flight by three hours, then straight-up canceled it with no explanation.

• They rebooked us—three days later. Like, what?! No way.

• I had to scrap that flight and rebook with another airline, which cost me nearly $4,000 for a one-hour flight for my family.

So, yeah. Stress levels were through the roof before we even made it to Vancouver for our overnight stay. To make things worse, there was a snowstorm in Vancouver (because, of course), and I was terrified our second flight would be canceled, too. The thought of having to pay for an expensive resort while being stuck in Canada was not ideal.

Luckily, we made it.

First Impressions: Pure Magic

The moment I arrived at Xcaret, I was in complete awe. The entire resort was like stepping into Eden—seriously, the aesthetic is beyond anything I’ve ever seen before.

Aesthetic Rating: 1,000/10

The place is stunning. From the architecture to the lush jungle vibes, everything was chef’s kiss. But let’s get into the details…

The Beach: Absolute Perfection

My favorite part of the whole resort was the beach.

• Huge cliffs surrounding crystal-clear water.

• Kayaking through caves (which felt like something out of a dream).

• The whole setup was beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.

If you’re a beach person, this is a must.

The Pools: Amazing, But Inconvenient

The resort has some seriously cool infinity pools and a kids’ pool with a small waterslide, which my kids loved. BUT… there were no public bathrooms near the main pools. So, if you needed to go, you had to go on a whole mission across the resort. Not ideal, especially with kids.

The Food: Good But Repetitive

The food was delicious, especially if you love authentic Mexican cuisine. Think:

• Soft shell tacos

• Tons of fresh fruit

• Huge buffet with so many options

BUT… the buffet never changed. It was the same exact options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. For a few days, that’s fine. But after almost two weeks? My kids were so over it.

The Parks: 10/10, Worth Every Penny

One of the biggest reasons to stay at Xcaret is that it includes access to four different adventure parks. Normally, it’s about $250 USD per person to go to one, so having unlimited access was a huge perk.

Here’s a breakdown of what we did:

Xplor – This was SO fun. We did ziplining and rafted through crystal caves, which was my personal favorite.

Xenses – Incredible. We floated through mud and saltwater caves, which was such a unique experience. There was also a pitch-dark cave where you had to feel your way through. Super cool, but also hot and claustrophobic—Richard and Akio had to turn back.

Xel-Há – A snorkeling paradise, but I noticed way fewer fish than when we went 12 years ago. Not sure if it was just a bad day or if things have changed.

Xcaret Park – The highlight for the kids was a jungle gym made of nets where they could climb and then slide into natural pools. They LOVED it.

Honestly, the parks made the trip. If you’re coming here, this is what you’re paying for.

The Downsides: What Wasn’t Worth It

While the parks were incredible, the actual resort itself wasn’t super kid-friendly.

• The kids’ pool was great, but only for younger kids (probably best for ages 5 and under).

• There were no big waterslides, which was disappointing.

• Not a ton of on-site entertainment for older kids.

If you have kids who need a lot of resort activities, this might not be the best fit.

The Norovirus Nightmare

Oh, and then there was the norovirus.

• My two boys and I got violently ill—like, I’ve never been this sick in my life.

• I threw up so hard that the veins in my face literally burst.

• It’s rampant at resorts right now and also spreading through airports, so just be aware.

• Richard somehow didn’t get sick (lucky him), but the plane ride back was disgusting—so many sick kids throwing up everywhere.

Honestly, those extra days at the resort helped because we needed time to recover.

Final Thoughts: Was It Worth It?

Okay, so after spending nearly $2,000 CAD per day, was Xcaret worth it?

Sort of… with some conditions.

If I did it again, I would:

Stay at Xcaret for a shorter time (maybe 4-5 days).

Then switch to a more affordable, kid-friendly resort with better on-site amenities.

Still take advantage of the adventure parks, because that was the best part.

Would I go back? No because you really only need that experience once

The trip was 30k canadian for us so I would next time go on 3 x trips for that price instead at a lower budget

If you’re thinking about going, my advice is: be prepared for some of the downsides (and maybe pack some anti-nausea meds just in case). Embrace the parks and take lots of pics!

But here’s what this trip really reminded me of…

It’s all about alignment.

When things flow, they flow—like those moments at Xcaret when everything was beyond magical. And when things don’t? It’s usually a sign to reassess and redirect. (Like when my flight got canceled, and I had to pivot FAST.)
